Let’s talk about podcasts—the people you use to tune out the rest of the world when your coworkers just won’t cut it. Kidding!
But I personally find plugging in headphones and zoning into another conversation really helps keep my mind active during the maintenance parts of my job–the less glamorous elements of employer branding! And it looks like I’m not alone—check out this neat infographic from podcastinsights.com:
If you have a killer workplace like mine, then you can agree that people in your workplace are loyal and educated (although we definitely wouldn’t mind being affluent…!) With its rising popularity, podcasts serve both as a way to inform and connect us, especially in the talent and business spaces. One of the ways I bonded with a fellow coworker when I first joined the team was by our shared love of My Favorite Murder (it’s not as bad as it sounds!…Well, it can be).
With all that being said, here are my (unsolicited) suggestions for podcasts that can help you and your team through the three major stages of a workday:
- The Quiet Time Brain
Okay, it’s time. Your desktop desperately needs sorting, your data entries need to be properly input, and you need to clear out that spam folder. Why give in to monotony? Listen to something that will give you a giggle through the grime. Punch Up the Jam is a perfect way to remember the hit songs of yesteryear and how woefully awful they are upon closer inspection. The off-the-wall bits of Demi and Miel are exactly what you need to get your groove on again!
- The Introspective Brain
You need to think outside the box. Working in a creative field like recruitment marketing (or any type of marketing for that matter) requires you to push the boundaries, but what boundaries can you push if you’re not sure what’s actually going on in the world? Make sure your brand is reflecting the best parts of today by staying in touch current events. I suggest a series like Serial season 3, where Sarah Koenig’s team investigates a year in the life of a courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio, and shudder about the intricacies of the American court system. We’re in an age where education is of the utmost importance, and it’s imperative that employees and companies alike keep up with the state of the world.
- The Power Boss Brain
Even if you’ve got something going on, listening to these kinds of conversations can seep into your mind and give you the fantastic answer to maddening problems. Since we are in branding and recruiting, check out the Recruiter’s Live Lounge with Roy Ripper. It’s not just a canned “you can hire the best talent every day!” spiel, Roy shares the real deal: the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of life as a recruiter. Besides, there’s nothing better than talking to someone who actually gets what it’s really like.
