Building A New Careers Site? Here Are The First Steps You Need To Take

Let’s face it – your careers site could probably use some revamping. Heck, you may not even have a careers site to begin with; just a sad ATS page for candidates to land on when they click “Careers” or “Jobs” on your corporate website.

No matter where you’re at with your current careers site, if you’re thinking of giving it a facelift, you’re probably burning the old to the ground and rebuilding from there. This means you’re essentially starting with a clean slate.

But the question is, where do you start?

When building a new careers site, there are many factors to take into account; but before you go too deep down the rabbit hole, there are some simple steps you need to take to set yourself up for success.

First Steps to Take When Building a New Careers Site

  1. Get pictures, pictures, and more pictures. I cannot stress this enough with employer brands ‚Äì you MUST have pictures. They are the bread and butter of making your brand come to life. And here‚Äôs the good news: your marketing team most likely has a store of them somewhere. Rather than asking for individual pictures, just get access to the whole stash. No such luck with marketing? Head out to the floor and take some yourself; you‚Äôll be amazed what you can capture with just your phone. Your new careers site doesn‚Äôt have to have video on it right away, but it will be an absolute failure to launch with no pictures.
  2. Figure out the navigation. How are candidates going to get around your site? Remember, this is a revamp so you need to go all-out, which means surpassing that single sad landing page you‚Äôre rocking right now. But you can‚Äôt just arbitrarily start throwing pages up, you need to think about what makes sense from a candidate‚Äôs perspective. Typically, this means different pages for your job families (or, the 3-5 big buckets most of your roles could be sorted into). You also may want a page or two for specialty information. Is your company big on diversity hiring and likes to push that? It should have its own page.
  3. Understand the purpose of your site. Ok, so this one is a little more ‚Äúin the clouds‚Äù ‚Äì but it‚Äôs an important step. Find your focus before you start your build. Your number one focus should be your candidates. Keep in mind that the site is for them and you want to make it as easy as possible for them to find the jobs and information they‚Äôre looking for. It‚Äôs not to create the flashiest (pun intended) site around, but to do everything with purpose while keeping the design as sleek and with-the-times as possible.
